Chicken Feeds Dos & Don't

When you start raising chickens in your garden, you should have enough information on steps to feed them. Otherwise, you will find that you are spending a lot on food and that you are not getting any return from it.

Before you start breeding chickens, you will have to buy some equipment like feeders and waterers.

Ensure that you are buying excellent quality products that will save you money, or you will have to replace the feed and water dispensers very soon. Do not go for the tiny sized feeders and waterers because they will be useless after a few weeks. Start immediately with larger ones, as they will save you problem. They will also require less frequent filling. Moreover, these items are more strong.

If you are dwelling in a region with cold weather, make sure that you purchase water dispensers with a heating source implemented into them. You will certainly need to have this badly in the winter. If you do not get them, the water will freeze inside the dispensers. All you have to do, when the summer comes, is to unplug them and after that re-plug them again the next winter.

As a rule of thumb, provided that the light gets on, your chicks will keep eating, so make sure that you have a light that can be easily turned on and off, or your chickens will get too weight to lay eggs. If you are breeding chickens for meat, then you will have to keep the light on for much longer.

Feeding your chickens with table scraps is a very nice idea, especially from an economic perspective, but you should make sure that you are providing them the table scraps from plant origin only. You can give them salad leftovers, bread crumbs, vegetables, fruits and similar foods. Table leftover scraps are balanced for chickens and they will love them more than the poultry feed you get from the store.

Make sure that you protect your chicken feed from wild birds, or you will turn out spending a fortune. Some predator wild birds prey on domesticated ones, so make sure to protect your chickens well from these kinds of wild birds.

Finally, make sure that you provide a free range way of living to your chickens from time to time. Feeding your chickens with grass and weeds will enable them to grow healthier.
